I was doing okay laughing quietly, until this:
“Fury: .( .( .(”
and then I lost it. (note to self–no reading your recaps at work anymore!)
I’m so, so glad you’re telling me this, because I embarrassed myself with how hard I laughed. At myself.
KEEP READING THEM. PEOPLE YOU WORK WITH SHOULD LEARN TO APPRECIATE A GOOD CHUCKLE.
This. This is what killed me as well. I mean, the scene in the movie and I was close to sobbing because Phil was my FAVORITE. But this. Oh god… the Fury sad face…. I was crying I was laughing so hard.
JUST IMAGINE FURY FACE ON ALL SUBSEQUENT REWATCHES
.(
NO STOP PLEASE! I’LL DO WHATEVER YOU WANT!
Just don’t make me laugh so hard I pee… I’m pregnant, I don’t have much room left…
Thor says “DO I LOOK TO BE IN A GAMING MOOD?” You look like you’re LARPing, so sorta? That got you an honest-to-Thor spit-take.
Great recap, great film, great feeling of geek satisfaction right now.
My only wish for these recaps is a spit-take, honestly. Thank you so much!
It was so fantastic, I’m just so pleased with how the film came out.
Watching Coulson fanboy all over Steve was probably the most adorable thing ever. EVER. And Tony really did get a ton of the good lines, though Thor’s “He’s adopted” made me laugh harder than just about anything.
In conclusion, I need the Black Widow/Hawkeye movie ASAP.
It was such a good character touch. :D Ahaha, agreed about the adopted line.
YES. IT WOULD BE THE BEST.
I’m with Em. I was silently amused until Fury: .( .( .( ROFLOL
Hilarious recap.
Haha, he can express every emotion with just one eye. Thank you so much!
Okay, I was laughing from the awkward helmet onward. Just saw it yesterday and now I’m craving shawarma. CURSE YOU JOSS WHEDON!!!
Our theater *erupted* in laughter at the Hulk battering Loki scene!
Thank you for writing this fantastic recap!
Man, there’s this amazing Greek restaurant up the street from me, but they’re closed for renovations and I can’t find a replacement. This movie has just destroyed my whole life.
It was so awesome! DUDE HAD IT COMING.
Thank you for reading it!
I just saw this with my sister. When Coulson came on screen I told her I had a theory he was secretly the most bad ass of them all. I think I was right. *wipes tear*
Is it wrong that when Steve and Tony were fighting in the lab, all up in each others faces, I kept waiting for them to kiss?
I can’t wait to go see it again.
It’s kind of true! Like when you consider that everybody else knows they’re capable of intense feats of physical prowess, and he’s just this regular dude in a suit, it’s totally badass to confront a demigod on his own.
Haha, if you’re wrong, then apparently the whole rest of the internet is, too.
Agreed!
This was recced to me from someone at my corner of LiveJournal.
What a great recap. Do you have a photographic memory or some other semi-super power?
I was concerned with Natasha’s little pistols too. They didn’t take time to explain about her other weaponry. Comic book readers know that she shoots electro-static charges from her bracelets.
I really enjoyed reading this. I’ll look around the site for other things you’ve written.
I actually do have an odd level of recall for movies (I’ve done a couple of recaps just off memory and one or two notes), considering I can’t remember my own birthday sometimes, but I had to go back and make sure I got the dialogue right for this one.
Really? That’s awesome! I was just glad she got to use her environment and the weapons that were available to her.
Everything each recapper has done will show up if you click their name up at the top of their post! We’ve got a bunch of different stuff here, enjoy!
Just saw this movie TWICE, I loved it so.
And you had me from Coulson swooning into Chris Evans’s beefy arms. I sat in a dark room full of sleeping people at midnight, goblin-chuckling like a creeper, underlit only by the glow of my cell phone.
Still, is it bad that I want Coulson to be alive/resuscitated and for Fury to just be the Biggest Troll? Because that was a hamfisted character death, even for Joss Whedon, and it makes Fury a hyper-douche to lie like that if Phil IS dead. Even in-theater, when the “twist” was revealed with the cards, I was like, “Coulson’s gonna be SO. MAD. you got red on his Cap’n A memorabilia. THEY WERE NEAR-MINT!!”
And damn, good catch on the Natasha scene with Banner! :/ Joss is big on women as physically weaker and more frightened than men, trying to use the power of their girly emotions to make things be okay. I think I missed it b/c, for once, that felt a little justified; it kind of made sense with her previous interaction with Bruce, and that since she’s all about control, something as chaotic as the Hulk would trip her out a little bit– except that flies in the face of the Loki interrogation scene. Blargh!
Speaking of… I had to Google “quim.” What the FUCK, Loki, that doesn’t sounf like the god I know, who turned into a mare and gave birth to an octopus horse. Gendered slurs ain’t a cute look, even without threatened sexual assault/FGM. :c
On an up note, my teenage sister told me today she has a “sinister vagina,” so we cracked a lot of jokes about “genital disposition” and “dat plottin’ pussy,” and that if her vagina was in a royal court, it would be the Grand Vizier poisoning the king and vying for the throne. So now I’ll just associate that with Black Widow instead. :D
LEGITIMATE LIFE CHOICE.
I’ve seen some theories floating around that I really like! I feel like the only thing going for him being actually dead is that we saw him breathe out one last time, but hey, he could have been revived? Plus I thought Clark Gregg was signed for a few more movies, but I don’t know. I just hope he is.
Yeah, I’ve got a lot of issues with Joss Whedon. I mean, I think it’s wonderful that his writing opened up a lot of avenues for people to create awesome, self-sufficient heroines, but at the same time, a lot of his actual stuff doesn’t sit right with me. This was one of those things, and I strongly feel it could have been easily accomplished without having the tiny woman running in terror from the giant violent beast.
Man, I only know that word because I read a lot of terrible historical fiction! Though I feel like that one instance of a gendered insult actually worked for him? His whole deal was getting inside people and screwing them up, so he probably figured calling her that is what would upset her the most. Obviously this was not the case.
I would like to embroider this paragraph on a sampler and hang it in my bathroom. GRAND VAGIZIER.
Excellent recap!!
I told my fiance before we went into the movie that he didn’t have to get extra napkins because I probably wouldn’t cry during The Avengers. I SO DID. But not gross crying like I usually do, just kind of tear rolling down your cheek crying.
Am I the only one that recognized the old security guard as the trustee from The Green Mile (Harry Dean Stanton)? It’s hard to recognize him when he’s not requesting that Mae West sit on his face.
Thank you!
I somehow managed to not cry, but my emotions ran deep.
I recognized him! But I was extra excited about Powers Boothe as the Council head. That tickled me.
Great recap! Really well done :) I loved this movie so much that we actually went to see it twice in two days. I, too, would really love to see more of the backstory regarding the Black Widow and Hawkeye. That scene between the two of them right after he comes out of being Loki-tized? So good.
I especially liked that you (deliberately, I assume) quoted Blaise Pascal in relation to chicken nuggets. Dude, that is bad ass.
Thank you! It’s one of those ones that’ll be on permanent rotation for me when the dvd comes out. They were so compelling as characters with history that it’d be stupid to not have a movie for them.
Haha, I didn’t do it deliberately! I just really like chicken nuggets.
I MEAN WAIT IT WAS TOTALLY DELIBERATE
I’M EXTREMELY SMART
Aaagh! Non-US release (Australia) does NOT get the shawarma scene!
Also lost it at .(.(.(
It’s funny, the bit with Natasha getting trapped under debris and facing down (running away from) the Hulk didn’t bother me so much. It made her a bit more human, and it totally went against Whedon (in my experience). Usually we get some kind of butt-walloping waif, and this scene countermanded it.
Also: scene with Hulk side-punching Thor? That’s Grand Central Terminal, and the info center clock that gets trashed. Lived in NYC for 14 years. I sobbed when they digitally smashed up those windows. Only the Hulk-punch brought me back.
Agreed on a Clint and/or Natasha flick, indeed.
YEAH BUT YOU GUYS GOT THE MOVIE A WEEK BEFORE US SO NYAH.
I don’t know, man, I’d have preferred a butt-walloping waif to having to watch her cower. I don’t like that.
HULK-PUNCH FIXES ALL EMOTIONAL TURMOIL.
It would be the best! I mean, there have been two whole Punisher movies. The least they can do is deliver this one.
I believe Thor says “In my youth, I COURTED war” as in going out and picking fights just for the hell of it. You basically said everything I wanted to say about this movie but with more wit and panache. Thank you!
Oh man, that was actually on my Big List o’ Edits (because I write and post as fast as possible, so I have to go back over things when I’ve got some distance), but somehow I skipped over it. Thank you!
And thank you so much for reading!
effin’ brilliant, thank you for this.
somewhere, god sits on a cloud and sadly folds his giant cape, empyrean tears staining the fabric as he sadly whispers Steve’s name
::dies:: you made me choke on my own spit!
.) now I will only make Fury faces 4ever.
I mean, wouldn’t you be totally sad if Steve Rogers made fun of your clothes? Thank you for reading!
.D .D .D
I was just pointed to this site on Monday and quite quickly it became a case of “I want more Marvel/Sherlock/Game Of Thrones even more because I want to keep hanging out with these brilliant, funny women!”
Heartfelt, too. I like that.
So, thank you.
And thank you! Laura created this site as a place for people to be embarrassingly enthusiastic about the media they consume, and I’m really glad you enjoy what you read here! YOU CAN HANG OUT WITH US FOREVER. IN FACT YOU HAVE NO CHOICE.
Is someone gonna write up Doctor Who later this year?
We don’t have anybody lined up to recap it at this point, nope.
Best. Recap. Ever. If he read it, Nick Fury would be all: .)
Well no, he wouldn’t. He’s not much of a smiler, is he? Maybe more like .|
.| is his WHOLE LIFE. Thank you for reading!
I am so glad I stumbled across this site, because all of you ROCK.
This recap made my day, though I probably shouldn’t have read it at work because I was having a hard enough time trying to keep a straight face and then I got to .(.(.(
Oh shit, I think I’ve ruptured something
The moment that had me laughing and you brought it up in your recap was Hulk’s ”puny god” one liner. Kinda fitting seeing as how Loki was a…pathetic villain.
