Hoarders: Family Secrets 1.3 – Michelle & Yama

You all know the drill by now: Hoarding is a mental illness, and we’re respectful of the folks who put themselves out there for public scrutiny in their attempt to better themselves, their families, and their lives. It’s incredibly brave what they’re doing, and we here at HDJM want to encourage them (and anyone reading) on that path to wellness by being kind and thoughtful as they take that journey.

“This is never what I intended for my kids. Intellectually I know it’s wrong; I just don’t know how to fix it.” And that, in a nutshell, is the heartbreak of this disorder, isn’t it? Let’s meet Michelle. Continue reading

“It’s an emotional thing when you try to fill yourself up [with things], and then you get filled up for a little while, and then you’re empty and you go back out to fill yourself back up.” Marlene, one of our hoarders, sums up the whole problem perfectly.  And always remember: for these people it’s a hoard, but it could have easily been drugs, alcohol or food.

We should be treating all of them the same: as fellow humans with a mental illness. Continue reading

This is our last episode of the year as Hoarders takes a month-long hiatus.  We have two tough women that have alienated themselves from their children both through their anger and their hoarding.  But those are the only similarities between the two. Continue reading

Hoarders 6.8 – BG and Lee, Chris

This episode has one of the most tragically beautiful homes in the show’s history, absolutely hoarded to the gills. And we also had another tender-hearted man that let his things separate himself from what he wants most: a relationship with his family.

To prepare for this particular episode, I’ll let you know that I have never seen more anger that had me worried someone was going to be hurt than I have in this episode. And we’re just seeing a 22 minute cut. Matt Paxton said that this was the episode that almost had him quitting the entire show. Not just walking away from a hoard, but quitting. It’s tough. (And there is anger in both stories, but allusions physical violence on the first, for those that need the warning.) Continue reading

Welcome back to a new season of Hoarders on Hey, Don’t Judge Me! For any new readers who might be coming along, I want to stress that we take the work of the Hoarders‘ production staff very seriously. We do not view this as “rubbernecker television.” Everyone on the show (and they come by and comment on occasion!) believes fervently in shedding light on this disorder and in getting help to the people portrayed. Many viewers have finally been able to put a name to what has been wrong in their life (or the life of a loved one) by virtue of this program. I have nothing but admiration and respect (and a lot of hand sanitizer) for everyone involved in this show.

As always, the rule at HDJM is that if we don’t love something, we move on. If you were looking for a site to make fun of things, this isn’t the place for you. Hard questions can be asked, but tone really does mean everything, so please keep that in mind. On to our season premiere episode! Continue reading
